Book Review: Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton

Little Black Lies

Thriller/Suspense
Minotaur Books

Review Copy from Netgalley

Blurb:

In such a small community as the Falkland Islands, a missing child is unheard of. In such a dangerous landscape it can only be a terrible tragedy, surely...

When another child goes missing, and then a third, it’s no longer possible to believe that their deaths were accidental, and the villagers must admit that there is a murderer among them. Even Catrin Quinn, a damaged woman living a reclusive life after the accidental deaths of her own two sons a few years ago, gets involved in the searches and the speculation.

And suddenly, in this wild and beautiful place that generations have called home, no one feels safe and the hysteria begins to rise.

But three islanders—Catrin, her childhood best friend, Rachel, and her ex-lover Callum—are hiding terrible secrets. And they have two things in common: all three of them are grieving, and none of them trust anyone, not even themselves.

In Little Black Lies, her most shocking and engaging suspense novel to date, Sharon Bolton will keep the reader guessing until the very last page.

Review:

I have read every book Sharon Bolton has ever written. And while I do like her Lacey Flint series, I love her standalone novels more. So when I read the blurb for this new standalone novel, I jumped at the chance to read and review. I was not disappointed for a moment.

The setting is unusual, all I know about the Falklands were that it was the scene of conflict in the 1980s and that there are penguins. The islands are a small community, so everyone knows or thinks they know everyone else's business.

Almost three years to the day when Rachel was responsible for the death of Catrin's two sons, another child goes missing. This time one of the visitor's children, but in the past two years two other children have also disappeared and never been found. No one wants to think they are living with a murderer among them and suspicion for this third disappearance falls on the visitors from the cruise ship.

But the other two children disappeared when there were no visitors. The small community is coming to the conclusion that they must face facts - perhaps someone on the islands is a murderer. It could be someone they know, someone they trust, someone they love...

The book is told through the eyes of three characters: Catrin, Rachel and Callum, Catrin's ex-lover. But all three are damaged characters and there may be a case of unreliable narration going on - Catrin is still grieving over the deaths of her children, Callum suffers from PTSD and blackouts where he doesn't know what he's done and Rachel seems to be suffering from post-natal depression two years after the birth of her youngest son.

There are so many twists and turns in the book it's like a maze and just when you think you have it all figured out, you haven't. The author knows how to keep the tension and the attention going. You just have to read on to see what happens next.

It's a book about pain and loss, grief and understanding, but most of all it's a book about characters. Ms. Bolton has created a memorable trio with Catrin, Callum and Rachel and you know that for evermore their lives will be intertwined, no matter what happens.

I did have one niggle with the book, but that's only a preference, most of it is written in the present tense, which is not my favourite for a novel. But because I love the writer, I carried on reading. And in such a tense situation, the present tense did give it a sense of urgency that perhaps past tense wouldn't have.

A great read.

Book Spotlight: A Memorable Man by Gill Gascoigne

A Memorable Man
by Gill Gascoigne
Historical Fiction
Austin MaCauley Publishers

Blurb:

Thurston Hey is the man around whom this charming rustic tale develops against an unfolding backdrop of civil war in the 1600s in rural England.

From Thurston's childhood unhappiness through to his adulthood interwoven with other village characters of different classes and loyalties, the main character is set off on a path ultimately overcoming tragedy with triumph on his voyage of self-discovery and as he tries to win Elspet, the woman of his dreams.

A Memorable Man is a compelling historical story about self discovery and how people relate to one another with the ultimate triumph of good over evil, its message as relevant today as when the drama is set. The tale moves around and does not necessarily follow a predictable route; A Memorable Man will hold your attention until the end

***

Excerpt:

Thurston Hey might have had a memorable name but he was not on first acquaintance a memorable man.

“Ne’ mind lad…” his mother used to say when he stumbled into the little cottage, his face dirty and tear-stained from the bully boys “…tha’sl ‘ave last laugh!”

Thurston missed his mother. He couldn’t ever remember the softness of an embrace but her unquestioned faith in him always gave him comfort…comfort that he had missed in the two years since her death.

The little cottage, built with his Father’s own hand before he was born, was quiet now when he entered it. No bully boys chased him home in tears these days, no stoic words of comfort welcomed him in. Home was his only comfort now; his short leg didn’t matter in the little cottage. He was master in this house, in this little world.

He was lucky he knew. After all he had bread to eat, a roof over his head, and a fire to warm him to bed. It was a hard life for some outside the little cottage and he was grateful for its comforts.

It was the eve of All Hallows. “Mischief night” his Mother used to call it.

He and his Father and Mother would sit in his long ago childhood years, waiting for the rattle on the door, the mud at the window. The same chill, stomach-churning fear that was such a part of his young life reached through time and made him shiver again. He had no fear of ghosts or witches abroad this night. As always, the ever present dread was of his fellow man, even though those years had long since passed.

***

Excerpt:

The elevator doors opened and there was Reece standing in front of me. He was dressed in a black suit and blue tie. He stole my breath and brought a genuine smile to my face. He looked so beautiful and so handsome and I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

“I thought you were going to wait for me outside,” I asked, making myself breath.

“I decided that wasn’t proper.”

“Proper?”

“I want this night to go well. Manners are very important to my mom. And had she known I was waiting for you outside instead of coming in...well, she would have slapped me in the back of my head.”

I wanted to kiss him all over.

I’ll say it again. He’s different and he has broken me.

“So you’re being a gentleman for me?”

His blue eyes fixed on me so long I thought my clothes were going to drip to the floor.

“For you, always.”

He was the prince and I was the unstable, reluctant damsel in distress who didn’t think she deserved a happily ever after ending.

“I’m a mess, I should really go home and change,” I said, trying hard to hold back how badly I wanted to run away and hide. He was perfect, and had perfect manners, and I was a misfit whose mom ate with her fingers and chewed with her mouth open and never got past the eighth grade.

I was faking it. Everything I did was fake. My past, my upbringing, my father— it was all always there reminding me I was an imposter and that soon, very soon, everyone would find out the truth about me and I’d be dragged to the center of town and stoned.

“You look beautiful.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“That’s because you don’t see yourself the way I see you.”

“And how do you see me?”

“As the most beautiful girl in the world.”

He was so wrong, so dreadfully mistaken. But, at that moment, I would not argue with him because his voice made me feel that maybe I could be his princess and he my prince. We could ride into the sunset and live happily ever after.

I looked down at myself and noticed that my shirt wasn’t tucked into my skirt anymore. I started to tuck it back in when he said, “Leave it.”

“What will your mom think? I can’t leave it the way it is.”

“She’ll think what I think. That you’re breathtaking.” He unbuttoned his jacket and pulled out his shirt from his pants. “There, now we’re both messy.” He held out his hand for me. “Shall we?”

I smiled. “Lead the way.”

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Flavor of the Week by Candy Caine

Attorney, Raven Gould, is tired of defending scumbags and fending off the advances of her boss. So she decides to quit her high-powered career and take a job at a popular ice cream parlor. Her aunt is alarmed at Raven’s decision and secretly convinces psychologist, Lucas Lusk, to check out her niece’s mental state.

Reluctantly, Lucas agrees. But after meeting the dusky beauty, he realizes he wants to do a lot more than check out her mental state. The problem is, Raven has a thing against psychologists and if she discovers why he keeps running into her—seemingly accidentally—she’ll never give him the time of day.

Raven soon finds herself intrigued by the tall, quietly sexy doctor, completely unaware of his relentless pursuit, or his determination to have her at all costs. And when a dangerous enemy from Lucas’ past wreaks havoc on his career, Raven must choose between guarding her heart or standing by the man she thinks betrayed her trust.

Changing the subject, Raven said, “I want to thank you again for taking me to the theater tonight. Our seats were practically on stage. I felt as if I was part of the show.”
“I’m glad you had a good time and that the show lived up to its reviews,” Lucas said before sipping his Manhattan. “I really enjoyed the show, too.”
“Music is so powerful. It has a way of bringing people together. I came away with the feeling that we should hold fast to our dreams. That made me think of your mother and her fierce desire to live in the United States, no matter what.”
“I thought of her, too. You would’ve definitely liked her.”
Raven sipped her drink and dabbed at her lips with her napkin. “I’m certain I would have. Is your father still alive?”
“No. He died several years before my mother. Heart attack.” Lucas looked away a moment.
Raven touched his hand gently. He turned back toward her. “I’m so sorry.”
“At least my brother Michael and I had them both around while I was growing up.”
“Okay. Official change of subject to a happier topic,” Raven declared sensing his melancholy.
“Like what?” Lucas asked.
“Like I’d love to pick up the cast recording of the show,” Raven said.
“Here you go,” Lucas said, removing a CD from a pocket in his coat.
Raven’s eyes widened. “When on earth did you get that?”
“During intermission while you went to the ladies room.”
“Don’t you mean when I got on that mile-long relief line?”
Chuckling, Lucas said, “Yes, then.”
“I can’t believe this. How did you know? Thank you ever so much! You’re so thoughtful!”
“I know,” Lucas replied.
“And so very humble, as well.”
“Now, now, be nice. By the way, do you piss off Santa, too?”
Raven laughed until tears filled her eyes. When they cleared, she said, “Sorry my sarcastic side sometimes overpowers everything else.”
“We’ll listen to it together,” Lucas suggested.
“Fabulous idea. I second it.”
They finished their drinks and enjoyed another round. There seemed to be no limit to their conversation until a band consisting of a pianist, drummer and guitar player began to play a lively rendition of All You Need is Love.
“I had no idea this place had a band,” Lucas admitted.
“And they’re quite good.”
“I know you love music, but how do you feel about dancing?” Lucas asked. A big grin occupied most of his face.
“Would love to!”
The song ended and the band started to play Unchained Melody. Lucas reached across the table for Raven’s hand and led her to a small area where several other couples were dancing. Raven slipped into Lucas’s arms. His closeness was so male, so bracing and she soaked in his unique scent. A familiar shiver of awareness rippled through her, as if emerging from a long sleep. Her heart hammered in her chest foolishly.
Was this an indication that Lucas had already breached her defenses? Had she already cast her fate to the wind? It would certainly appear so. Especially since the thought of being alone with him—skin touching skin—was suddenly crowding her mind and allowing no other thoughts to enter. The sensations Raven now felt were not the usual ones she’d have whenever she desired to have sex with some guy she was attracted to. These feelings were similar to those she once had when she thought she was in love with Gordon White. That made sense, she reasoned. It definitely wasn’t casual sex she now desired to have with Lucas. No, not in the least. She wanted to make slow, sweet love with him—again and again.
Lucas nuzzled her neck. Oh, yeah. She wanted him all right. And if that hard object pressing into her thigh was what she thought it was, the feeling was quite mutual.
The band launched into their rendition of I Will Always Love You, and Raven continued to enjoy his closeness as she casually slipped her arms around his neck. She gave into the desire to run her fingers through the back of his hair. In response he kissed her neck sending a fresh sensual thrill straight to her sex. Raven moved closer continuing to soak up that uniqueness of him that was making her heady. The urge to run her hands up and down his body under his clothing was nearly overwhelming. Her logical mind was running scenarios of them having sex.  Some were so hot she thought the circuits in her brain would overheat. She hadn’t felt so sexually charged in ages and began to fear what might happen if she didn’t sleep with him.
When the song ended, the band played a rendition of She’s a Maniac, before taking a well-earned break.
Lucas led Raven back to their table and got them another round of drinks.
Raven took a sip of her drink. “You seem to know your way around a dance floor.”
“My mother and father loved to dance. I guess I caught on watching them.”
“Well you obviously paid close attention.”
He grinned at her impishly. “Most girls liked boys who knew how to dance. And I liked girls.”
“Good to know. Perhaps after we leave here tonight we can listen to the CD from the show. ” Raven hoped he’d take the hint.
“It should sound wonderful on my Bose system,” Lucas said.
Raven’s heart fluttered as she began to anticipate what was going to happen.
After they finished their drinks, Lucas said,” if you’d like another drink, Raven, that’s fine. As for me, if I have another, we’ll have to take other transportation home.”
“No. I’m fine. In fact, I feel great!” She attempted to rise to prove her point, but never quite got to her feet. Gravity won the battle and she sat back down.
Lucas stifled a chuckle. “You seem to have gotten a real buzz on. Perhaps, I should get you home.”
“Nope. The night is still young. And the last time I checked, so are we... Or is it the other way around? Who cares? We’re in the greatest city in the world and should enjoy ourselves,” Raven said, as she nearly slid off her chair.
“Okay, happy girl, let’s go,” Lucas said as he came around to help Raven into her coat. He bent to kiss her tender neck. She made a purring sound of contentment.
They walked the short distance to his car and he helped her inside. As he drove out of the lot, he glanced at Raven. Her eyes were closed, but there was a smile on her face. It looked like she was just resting her eyes a moment, but by the time they were back on the expressway, the sound of her soft snores filled the car nearly making Lucas laugh. He fought valiantly to stifle them, not wanting to embarrass her. It wasn’t exactly the way he imagined the end of the date would go, but shit happens as they say.
Raven woke up when Lucas cut the engine in front of her house. Disoriented a moment, she asked, “Where are we?”
Lucas smiled at her. Her cheeks were flushed with sleep making her look adorable like a little girl. “At your place.”
“I thought we were heading to yours to listen to the CD?”
“That was the original plan.”
“Uh-oh,” she said quietly.  Was I asleep?”
“Yup. You slept all the way home.”
“You’re kidding. Please say you’re kidding. I’m so embarrassed. That never—
I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be. You’re adorable when you sleep,” Lucas said, unbuckling his seatbelt.
Raven rolled her eyes. “That won’t happen again. I promise.”
“You know we can keep doing this until we get a perfect,” he said. “Same time, next Saturday?”
A yawn snuck past Raven’s defenses and she apologized quickly, but not before Lucas chuckled. “I’d better get you inside while you’re still awake.” He leaned over the console and opened her seatbelt. Then he got out, walked around the car, and opened her door.
Smiling down at her, he asked, “Would you like me to carry you to the door?”
“Heavens no! What would my aunt think?”
“That I wore you out of course,” he said, offering his hand.
Raven took it to steady herself a moment before they walked to the door together. She had removed the keys from her purse and Lucas took them to unlock the door. Then he encircled her in his arms, drawing her closer to him. He kissed her gently. “Shall I pick you up at seven next Saturday?”
She nodded and placed her arms around his neck. “I’m truly sorry about tonight. I’ve never fallen asleep on a date before.” Her lips covered his, intending to be a sweet good night kiss. But instead of parting, their lips were pulled together like electromagnets coming together in an attraction of savage harmony. Both had totally forgotten that her aunt might be up and about. They were too engrossed with each other to think of anything else but kissing and touching one another.
Raven’s back was against the door as Lucas leaned into her, first devouring her mouth and then her neck. She grabbed handfuls of his hair, pulling his face close to hers. Their lips came together again in a fury, their tongues meeting in a tangled heap while they breathed as one.
Closer still, Raven rubbed against his straining cock. A soft moan escaped her lips. Lucas cupped her breast through her silk dress as he planted hurried kisses down her neck. His other hand inched up her dress toward her drenched panties.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I do storyboarding and content outlining. Then everything flows.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

They usually do. They write the story, I just type.

What is your favorite food?

Soup and crackers

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Morning – 4am

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

London. It’s busy with all kinds of people.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Sometimes. Everywhere from the Mediterranean, to the Antarctic.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Not usually. Depends on what I write.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Link is the bi-product of what was once a screenplay, edited over and over, now a novel and thrilling twist on the good versus evil battle.  Research was a key component to this book, it proved difficult to find weapon systems, swear words, names, abbreviations, places, and events that never existed.  This is a book for all that sci-fi readers in particular will really be thrilled to see.

The main character, Captain John Garrick is a killer by nature. He was born to kill. And at the hands of Captain Orius Becker, he was used to finish off the criminal element in the N.S.T.E.A.

No amount of careful planning can prepare the time jumpers for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move.  As the N.S.T.E.A seals a deal to deliver time technology to the notorious outlaw, Menser, Garrick plots to undermine the N.S.T.E.A. Technology becomes the enemy and time an illusion as Phoenix's crew prepares for the inevitable - a fight to the finish.  The future can be uncertain; then again, it could be the time jumpers last.  Garrick doesn't live by its rules, and he knows one thing is for sure: kill or be killed.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Know what your market is. Get a good editor. Write and rewrite until it’s perfect. Get a good cover.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I couldn’t think of anything on my new book. I planned it and it was engineered to do what it’s doing.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Life in general.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Take writing classes. You have to know the difference between natural dialog and static. You have to pick a genre you’re comfortable with. There’s no short cuts.

What are three words that describe you?

Unconventional, diligent, and cold blooded.

What's your favorite book or who is your favorite writer?

My favorite book is my own. However, others have influenced me.

About the Book:

LINK, by D.A. Karr, is a sci-fi thriller set in the year 2800, in a future apocalyptic world. It is suspenseful, intriguing, and action filled. Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler fans will enjoy reading this book.

Reviewed by Readers’ Favorite:

As the Earth shifts on its axis, all the continents either divided into small islands or converged into desert or ice. Humankind is caught in a war of survival and time.

Captain John Garrick of the Phoenix ship is a time enforcer at the National Space Time Enforcement Agency. He discovers that the N.S.T.E.A has sealed a deal to deliver time technology to the notorious outlaw, Menser, in exchange for Charles Ramsey, the ousted ex-president of the United Sectors.

Garrick plots to stop the deal from being carried out, and he and the Phoenix's crew prepare for the inevitable fight.

LINK has a classic sci-fi theme of good guys versus bad guys… If you’re a fan of Battlestar Galactica, LINK definitely has some of its great panache which makes it enjoyable.

Author Interview: Cristy Rey, author of Weeping Angels

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

Right now, I’m working on a new novel—probably two novels of a new paranormal mystery series—for this one, I’m doing a very structured outline. I’m following KM Weiland’s advice from Structuring Your Novel. It’s almost like an experiment for me because, up until now, I’m somewhere between a pants-er and an outliner. Something like Weeping Angels just came out of me. Straight onto the page. Marathon writing sessions. It consumed my every minute of every day for the weeks that I was working on the first draft. Usually, though, I start a novel and, once the story takes shape, I stop and write a bullet point outline of plot points, scene summaries, and character reactions… that kind of thing. I’m curious to see how planning out something at the level I’m planning out this next project is going to work out.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

All my stories start with characters. The plot usually flows from there: What kind of problem does this character have? What does this character want out of life? Can I—as a writer—set my character on a journey that will resolve their conflicts? Because of that, yes, in a way, the character does take over. I do a lot of revision both as I write a first draft and many times after between prepping the manuscript for my team of beta readers and readying it for editing. I’d rather not interfere with their processes—the characters’ processes—if it moves the story along. Later, I cut out the stuff extraneous to the plot.

What is your favourite food?

I’m Cuban and I live in Miami so I eat Cuban food practically every day and, some days, for every meal. Then again, I’m a fan of seafood and fish which isn’t necessarily a staple of Cuban cuisine. If I had to choose a whole cuisine that I could eat for the rest of my life, it would be Thai… but then I’d miss breakfast and breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. My favourite foods are all breakfast foods.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I think I made that awful transition from night owl to morning person a few years ago. I guess when I settled in, I lost the gusto for nightlife, but I’m recently getting it back. Let’s see if I can successfully make the transition back. After all, I live in a party town where the bars don’t close until 5 a.m.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I like lighthouses. I like autumn leaves changing. I like the rocky ocean cliffs. I get one of three of those things in Miami, but I’m not satisfied. If I could travel to some place like the coast of Maine or some coastal town in Spain, I’d probably never want to leave.

Do distant places feature in your books?

True story: I read a book that was set in Miami—where I’m from and where I’ve lived my entire life—and it was written by a person who lived just north of here in a neighbouring county. The author paid a lot of attention to setting. A lot. But it was consistently wrong. Just plain wrong. I thought, “If someone who visited here all the time… someone who perceives herself as a local could get it this wrong, then clearly Miami is misunderstood in popular literature just as it’s misunderstood in other media, including news.” I decided, then, after writing a few books that were set in other locations that I would focus on Miami—the real Miami. Miami filled with people with naturally tanned skin, heavy Spanish and Haitian Creole accents, and incredibly oppressive heat. A unique city where the minority enjoys majority privilege. A place where everyone is surrounded by people they’re nothing like and somehow manage to get along. It’s a truly rich environment. That’s “distant” to most people. When people think of my hometown, they think of three blocks on South Beach. I think that’s unfortunate.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Not while writing. Not as I’m tapping keys. But I do get inspired by music. I curate playlists almost as carefully as I construct the stories. They inform the characters. Weeping Angels is, in particular, driven by music. Frankie is a musician and the type of music that she writes and performs is integral to the story.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Weeping Angels is a novel I wrote on the heels of my friend’s death. At the time of her death, we were estranged. She is my Iris—the real woman who inspired the character whose death concerns the plot. Frankie and Topher are the two protagonists and they, for different reasons, are estranged from Iris at the time of her death. Believing for so long that they didn’t have roots, becoming as uprooted as they do because of the death takes them by surprise. They are brought together by this circumstance and fall in love. It’s a complicated story about complicated people—real people with real flaws and real opportunities to improve their lives.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I couldn’t even start listing all the things I’ve learned in the last week let alone the last couple of years. I’ve learned just as much about myself as I have about the business and craft at large. I think I learn something new every day—whether it’s a new tool for writing like Weiland’s Structure Template for Scrivener, or a new skill like formatting, or a new factoid about virtual marketing.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I think the first year of having my own business—because that’s what it’s been—has taught me a lot of lessons, but I don’t think I’ve done anything “wrong” so to speak. I’m still learning.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I mentioned Miami before, and that’s a big influence. But I think, overall, my life and the people that I’ve met in this wonderful, extraordinary, and completely unexpected life have set the tone for the stories that I like to tell and the characters I invest myself in. All of that—along with good music and bad weather—influence me daily.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

I’d say that Stephen King’s advice is the best you’re going to get: Read a lot. Write a lot.

What are three words that describe you?

Ever evolving girl.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

I’m at a loss to pick just one because then it sort of defines me, right?

The Closest Thing to OK – Coming May 2015

At eighteen years-old, Sam DeCastro moved to Tallahassee to lend her recently widowed brother a hand in caring for his two small children. Five years later, Sam is their sole caregiver, and her troubled brother increasingly fades from their family picture. Not a mother to the children that she raises. Not a wife to the brother that she’s shackled to. Not a daughter to the parents that hardly loved her as a kid. Not a cookie-cutter example of the perky PTA parent—not with her tattoos and penchant for heavy music, twenty-three year-old Sam has practically no social life, no college degree, and no room for love in her life.

Jake Turner is the counselor at Canopy Hopes where Sam’s niece and nephew attend school. Jake had Sam once, and then he lost her. Six months later, when they reunite for a parent-teacher conference, sparks reignite. With Jake back in the picture, Sam must decide what she wants for her own life: Stay trapped in a platonic marriage with an absent husband of a brother? Strike out on her own, leave the kids behind, and never look back?

Jake isn’t sure that Sam sees a happy medium, but he wants her to. He knows that, if she doesn’t, there won’t be any room for him in her life.

Title: Weeping Angels
Author: Cristy Rey
Genre: Romantic Women’s Fiction

Four years ago, Frankie Rios walked away from her best friend and big sister, Iris. To Frankie, Iris died the day that she last rejected Frankie’s attempts at getting Iris alcohol and drug treatment. Rather than accept grief for her beloved sister’s loss, Frankie turned to her music. A renowned cellist, Frankie has managed to ignore the pain and suffering of losing the person she loved most in this world. With Iris out of her mind and out of her life, Frankie was able to move on…or so she thought. Until Iris really died.

Topher went to war in 2001 only to return two years later damaged and broken. Unable to reconcile the war vet with the boy he used to be, Topher gave up on life. When Iris Rios, his long-lost childhood best friend, dies from liver failure at thirty-two years-old, Topher is forced to confront his past.  He must decide whether he deserves to heal. He must decide whether he will take that first step and then take another until he can recover what he lost: himself.

Weeping Angels is a story of grief carried and grief ignored. It’s about learning to love and moving on. Mourning someone once is hard enough, but mourning someone twice is unimaginably harder.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Piercing the Darkness by Angela Dennis

Thank you so much for inviting me to do a guest blog on Books in Tales!  I wanted to do something a little different, that you all enjoy. And who doesn’t like a Top Ten List! So, without further ado, here we go!

Ten Random Facts About Piercing the Darkness

1. Piercing the Darkness is a tie-in novella to the Shadow Born Series. It features Hilda, a secondary character in the first two books.

2. Hilda is an honorary IRT (Interspecies Relations Taskforce) hunter. She can’t be a true hunter because she’s a ghost.

3. After her death, Hilda refused to appear to Cade because she wanted him to move on, find someone who could meet his needs both physically and emotionally. And she was scared.

4. Even as a ghost, Hilda is able to manipulate physical objects. Her favorite weapon is a stiletto.

5. Out of all the IRT hunters, Hilda is closest to Keegan. Most likely because they both have a snarky and irreverent world view.

6. Before her death, Hilda was a member of a powerful coven. Her role was to eliminate rogue witches and any other threat.

7. Hilda died the same night Cade proposed marriage.

8. Cade is one of only three of his kind on the Earthly plane. His people were exterminated by the other deviants because of what they tried to do to humankind.

9. Although she had heard stories, Hilda never believed in the Void until she found herself thrown into the center of it.

10. Although Hilda is thrown into the Void as a ghost, she is turned in to something more. Something that can’t be defined as ghost, witch, or human.

Series Spotlight: Protect Her by Ivy Sinclair

Human. Angel. Demon.

Three species that have coexisted since the beginning of time, although humankind is blissfully unaware of the predators and protectors that walk among them. But there is a new threat emerging that affects them all.

The story begins when an innocent girl is saved from certain death by a man who straddles the worlds of darkness and light. Their relationship holds the key to saving everyone.

PROTECT HER: PART ONE

Get in. Get the job done. Get out. Get paid.

It’s a simple motto that I’ve lived by for the last five years. It’s kept me alive and made me rich.

There’s no love lost between me and the supernatural beings who walk the world beside us. But when it comes to being able to retrieve valuable information from the dead, Necromancer Riley Stone is the only game in town. They know it. I know it too, and that’s why my services aren’t cheap.

The archangel Benjamin hired me to find out why he has a new demon problem. Three demon interrogations in, and the only thing I know is that the demons are in hot pursuit of a nameless young woman. She’s here on Calamata Island, and the demon officials are willing to risk Benjamin’s wrath to grab her.

But I found her first, and she’s nothing like what I expected. In my line of work, you can’t afford to let anyone get too close. But there’s something about Paige Matthews that I can’t shake, and she needs my help. I won’t turn her over to Benjamin until I help her find out why the demons are after her.

So now I’ve got a demon problem, and I’m in way over my head.

PROTECT HER: PART TWO

Want to know what happens to a human caught in the crossfire between angels and demons? I’m going to make sure that Paige Matthews doesn’t find out.

The job that originally brought me to Calamata Island might be done, but I can’t leave Paige behind. Without me she’s defenseless against the demons that are after her. I just met her, but I feel protective of her, and I can’t walk away. Not yet.

Paige is at the epicenter of something big, and none of it is good. It’s not just the demons that want her. The angels are in on it too being led by the archangel Benjamin.

Paige’s past is being hidden by her amnesia. Those secrets want to be let out. It’s up to me to make sure that she stays alive long enough to find the answers that will finally reveal it all.

PROTECT HER: PART THREE

I want Paige Matthews. The archangel Benjamin’s claim on her soul is one that cannot be easily broken, but I intend to try. Of course, that’s assuming that she would want someone like me once this is all over.

First, we have to get off Calamata Island in one piece. I know someone who can help Paige finally unlock the memories of her past. That’s the key to gaining the upper hand against the demons who are coming for her. Among those is a familiar face; a demon official who stole something from me five years ago. Having a shot at a little vengeance in the process is all right with me.

Everything’s coming to a head, and this is one fight that I intend to win. I just have to make sure that I don’t lose Paige in the process.

Excerpt Part One:

I wanted to ask her questions, like why the demons were after her, but her initial confusion about the attack and look of shock when I mentioned demons told me that she was a civilian. No knowledge of the ugly underbelly that prowled the world beside hers. I envied people like that sometimes. It had been a long time since I had the luxury of that kind of innocence. Unfortunately for the woman, hers was about to go away as well.

Still, asking questions and ferreting out answers regardless of her physical or emotional state was part of my job. I was damn good at it. You just needed to know the right approach depending on the person, or thing, you were interrogating.

I decided to start my line of questioning with the simple stuff and hopefully build a thin layer of trust. People, especially humans, opened up quickly to others that they trusted. “So you know my name. What’s yours?”

Her eyes swung toward mine. Her pupils were dilated and glassy. She was deep into the throes of the effects of the drug. “Paige. Or at least, that’s what I call myself these days.”

It was a strange answer that only encouraged more questions in my mind. I made a mental note to come back to it. “Nice to meet you, Paige. I wish it were under better circumstances.”

That, as much, was true. Paige’s lean, athletic body, long blonde hair, and baby blue eyes were on the money for the type of woman that drew my attention like a beacon. Her full pouty lips begged for me to reach out my thumb and caress them. Even with the dirt, dust, and blood covering her, she looked like a blue-eyed angel.

I cursed myself for being so indifferent to the current situation even as I shifted in my seat from the sudden tightness in my jeans. Clearly I’d been out of the game too long. Work was my sole focus these days, and I had forgotten how liberated I felt after a simple roll in the hay.

“Are you taking me to the hospital? I think I’m hurt pretty bad,” she replied.

“Not as bad as you think. You just need a little rest,” I said. “Why were you in the graveyard tonight, Paige?” Given that she was human, my assumption was that she was a Wiccan. They often held their ceremonies in cemeteries to bolster their spells with the energy of soil. Dead bodies still emanated quite a bit of mystical juice.

“Running,” she said. “Couldn’t sleep.”

Another perplexing answer that made no sense. Demons didn’t hunt and attack regular humans for no reason. Then I corrected myself. Demons didn’t hunt and attack regular humans at all on Calamata Island. On the mainland, one would occasionally step out of line and feed on a human, but that was usually squashed quickly. It wasn’t good for anyone to have the humans be aware of the paranormal minions that walked in their midst.

There was a reason that the demons were showing up en masse and looking for her. I just had to figure out that reason, and then decide if there was any financial benefit for me in it. I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of getting involved in a demon matter, but if Paige was important to them, that could be highly profitable intel.

Book Review: The Dragon's Curse by Victoria Zagar

The Dragon's Curse
by Victoria Zagar
M/M Fantasy
Less Than Three Press
4 Stars
Review Copy from Netgalley

Book Description:

War is brewing between the Greenlands and the Summer Kingdom, despite the efforts of Lord Aidan and Prince Varion, who have been meeting in secret in an attempt to maintain peace. When war proves inevitable, Aidan offers Varion asylum, loathe to see the man he's come to care about become his enemy.

But Varion refuses, sacrificing safety and his own desires to stay in the Summer Kingdom in order to protect his little brother from their ruthless father. The two men instead declare a blood oath to always protect each other, an oath that will see them through war, transformation, and a deadly curse...

Review:

King Cendali of the Summer Kingdom has become a bitter and cruel man after the death of his first wife and he lives for war. He hates the Dragonfolk, a race who are said to be descended directly from dragons. The thought that someone actually might have mated with a dragon disgusts Cendali and he cannot bear the sight of the Dragonfolk with their strange eyes and scaly skin.

When floods drive the Dragonfolk out of their traditional territory and encroach on the Summer Kingdom, Cendali has his excuse for war. He wants to completely wipe out the Dragonfolk, thinking them unnatural. But first he wants to know how to gain the dragon power - how to transform into a dragon.

Prince Varion has been meeting with Lord Aidan of the Greenlands as the two of them try to avert war between their kingdoms and they have fallen in love. But it doesn't matter, for their meetings are not as secret as they suppose and Prince Varion's life is in danger as soon as his father knows.

Both Lord Aiden and Prince Varion set out on the same quest: to find the godess' shrine and discover the secret of the dragon power. For only by giving it to his father might Prince Varion live and protect his younger brother.

Yes, it is possbile for a human to turn into a dragon, but the power has a price. Once the power is used, the person will no longer be fully human. That isn't the only cost: males with the dragon power die as soon as they mate.

This was a wonderful romantic adventure, with lots of UST between our heroes. The world Ms. Zagar has created is fully realised, with its own history, culture and customs.

I'm not usually a fan of shifter romance stories, I have a phobia about dogs so books with werewolves tend to terrify me rather than think anything romantic. But I do adore fantasy and dragons, so I am glad I gave this one a try.

Although short at novella-length, the story and characters are fully developed. Aidan and Varion are both noble characters and you have to wonder why Cendali hadn't poisoned Varion's mind as much as he had his youngest son, Tiernon.

I really wanted them to get their happy ending, but with a curse that if you make love, you die, that may not be easy to come by.

I don't want to spoil anything, so you'll just have to read it to find out.

The writing is good and flows well, just one wee niggle: while researching the curse Varion and Aidan "poured" over books instead of "pored".

All in all a good fantasy adventure and romance.

Guest Post: Summertime by Chuck Gould

Guest Post: Why Do We Write?
by Chuck Gould

I began writing back at a time when it was a noisy process; the clackety-whack of keys striking paper through an inky strip of fabric, the geared “skrooch” of the carriage return, and the joyful ding of the bell to celebrate the beginning of a new line. Electric typewriters were expensive, and initially rare, but nowhere nearly as rare as a typewriter of any description among currently active writers.

We live in an age when the physical process of writing is easier than ever. Our word processing programs control margins, automate the beginning of a fresh line, correct spelling, and provide instant access to a dictionary as well as a thesaurus. Fact checking once required a trip to the library. Writers today can fact check nearly anything, in a matter of moments, without ever leaving the chair. As the writing process becomes easier, more aspiring writers appear.

There are predictions that more than 3-million new novels will be published in print or on line this year. That’s somewhere around 100,000 per day. There simply is not a viable, commercial market for that many new titles – regardless of inherent quality. We are entering an age when some of those novels will be now be written by algorithms. The competition for audience will no longer be each and every other published and self-published writer, but electro-brains slaving away in some obscure corner of a print shop.

The act of writing has been automated, but not the art. With less than 1-percent of authors raking in more than 99-percent of any serious money, (much like the music business), most of us need to look beyond financial motives to write. For me, at least, that’s a liberating realization.

As I write, I labor over every sentence. There are a lot of writers for whom the process is easier, and a lot of writers who produce more dynamic results. Changing the over-arching question from “How well must I write this to create a best seller?” to “Is this the very best and most literate job I can do, and am I proud of it?” shifts the paradigm.

Writers who approach the craft hoping for notoriety and huge financial rewards will, statistically, become frustrated and unhappy. We can’t all make money, but we can all strive for artistry. Odds of attracting sufficient readership to make the New York Times Bestseller’s list may be almost impossibly remote, but nothing prevents us applying our skills to create the best novels and short stories we can. If we write so that the dozen, hundred, five –hundred, one-thousand, or several thousand people likely to actually read it will enthralled, entertained, or inspired, it’s my opinion we have not labored in vain.

If we provoke thought, inspire curiosity, challenge stereotypes, or stimulate amusement among our readership, we have accomplished an artful thing. We have built a bridge of words between ourselves and our readers, across which we have successfully marched thoughts, concepts, images and emotions that will make at least a tiny difference in the lives of others.

I think that’s why we write. It’s an art, and we aspire to be considered artists.

Summertime
Book One
Chuck Gould
Genre: metaphysical fantasy
Publisher: Starry Night Publishing
Date of Publication: September 28, 2014
ISBN: 9781502523174
Number of pages: 298
Word Count:
Cover Artist: Larry Dubia

Book Description:

Wesley Perkins, successful and privileged advertising executive, makes an apparently impromptu purchase in a pawn shop. Almost immediately, he becomes immersed in a new reality. Old values evaporate. The line between good and evil seems inconsistent. Wesley is challenged to accept profound change, all the while juggling choices of enormous consequence.

Summertime, Book One, is the first portion of a story that delves into a surreal realm of metaphysical fantasy. Situational moralities are juxtaposed with omnipresent supernatural forces. Where the boundaries of our mundane lives intersect cosmic intents, events, and conspiracies, we can become overwhelmed by involuntary transformation. We look for surrogate sacrifices, and a home in Summertime.

Guest Post - The Creator's Eye: Mover of Fate by R.N. Feldman

Guest Post
A WELL-KEPT SECRET
R.N. FELDMAN

Most people know me as an artist, so it came as a surprise to all my friends, and even my own mother that I had written an epic sci-fi/fantasy novel.  The Creator’s Eye has been nearly thirty years in the making, and a very well kept secret from a guy with a rotten record of keeping his lips zipped.

The first inkling of The Creator’s Eye began when I was only six years old.  I was engrossed by video games, and my friends and I wanted to make our own.  We drew them out on paper and using a fair bit of imagination had each other play them.  However, when I went home, I kept thinking about them.  In fact, I wandered through my imaginary archipelago almost every night before I went to sleep for the last twenty-eight years.  Of course, the adventures of Michael and his companions were about as complex as you might expect them to be from a six year old’s He-Man and Transformers addled brain, but by the time I was twelve, all of the major plot points were there.  There are even still a few scenes inspired by movies I loved as a kid that survived into the final draft.  The black dogs in Chapter I partly came from Willow.  The scene in Chapter III when Michael and Maya jump off the roof, well, I was rather taken with Disney’s Robin Hood escaping the burning castle by leaping into the moat.

At twelve years old, I still envisioned The Creator’s Eye as a video game.  I wanted my audience to be able to control and interact with my characters, and I had some pretty advanced ideas for the era.  Being a rather precocious kid and having a mom who was very supportive of my creativity, I wound up having a meeting with a local video game company that wanted to hear my ideas.  Looking back on it, they were probably using me for market research, but it made me storyboard out an early draft for the presentation.  However, sitting in the office of that Santa Monica high-rise also made me realize that I wanted to be a kid for a while longer, so I shoved the story back into my brain for several more years.

It was in my twenties that I realized that I didn’t want it to be a video game (although it still bares the fast-pace of one).  It needed to be a book, and from there could be transformed into anything else I needed.  Also, my old ideas about video games were no longer so ahead of their time.  I took a few stabs at writing my story as a novel, but they were awful.  Parakeets would have squawked in protest if their cages were lined with my book.  It wasn’t until I read the Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi that I had an epiphany that The Creator’s Eye had to be written from multiple points of view.

I wish I could say that the story simply flowed out of me from that point, but I have learned from many years of painting, that no matter how clearly I picture something in my head, it doesn’t always come out how I expected it.  Even though I have imagined Michael, Maya, Sefu, and the rest for decades, I was often stymied when I put pen to paper.   Some parts I had to rewrite and mull over for weeks.  For instance, the emotional complexity and motivations of my characters was something that developed as I wrote them.  I often didn’t know what they would say about a situation until they were confronted by it.

Completing Mover of Fate, the first book in The Creator’s Eye series was one of the most thrilling moments in my life and I am so excited to finally be able to share it.  I just finished editing Part II and plan to release it this Fall, but there is much more to come.
